It’s been five years since My Dad Wrote a Porno was released, and to celebrate that wonderful fact, I’ve decided it’s about time to share my top five reasons for listening to it. For those of you not in the know, the Belinda Blinked books are written by Rocky Flintstone, the pseudonym of Jamie Morton’s father. Morton himself decided to look on the bright side of his father’s books and enlisted friends Alice Levine and James Cooper to help him navigate the life and times of Belinda Blumenthal.
Since its release, the podcast has worked its way through five of the Belinda Blinked books, with the announcement they will be reading through the sixth book in 2021. So, if this has piqued your interest, take a look at my five reasons for getting into this unique podcast...
It’s so bad it’s good
If you’re thinking the basis of the podcast sounds... Interesting, you’d certainly be right. But beyond being somewhat unorthodox to read your dad’s erotic literature for the world to listen to, perhaps the most intriguing thing is that Rocky’s writing is, well, sometimes questionable. However, what he lacks in the understanding of female anatomy, he makes up for in eagerness. And sure, there are times when he gets bogged down by the business side of things, and forgets that it’s supposed to be erotic, but that makes it even more fun. Plus, there are often listen-alongs to celebrate the release of new series, and as someone who’s taken part they can be a lot of fun. Just don’t try to eat dinner at the same time...
In short, the things that make Belinda Blinked bad make My Dad Wrote a Porno good.
It has a built-in
drinking game
If you’re feeling like you might need a drink or two to push through the embarrassment, then you’re going to love the drinking game. Devised by Morton, Cooper, and Levine, rules include taking a drink whenever something (usually clothing) is neatly placed in a corner, Belinda blinks, or a new character is introduced.
Of course, if you’re going to play the game I’d recommend spacing the episodes out so you don’t get too drunk...
There are dozens of
celebrity fans of the podcast- and they get involved
Over the past five years, plenty of celebrity fans have been enjoying the adventures of Belinda, her friends, and the Steeles Pots and Pans business. And the podcast has been helping them get involved, with several celebrities being interviewed for supplementary podcasts over the years. Fans include Elijah Wood and Mara Wilson, to Dame Emma Thompson and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Let’s be honest, if Frodo, Matilda, Nanny McPhee, and Alexander Hamilton himself say it’s good, I’m inclined to agree.
It’s more than just a
podcast
If five books worth of podcasts, as well as the additional celebrity podcasts and Christmas specials, isn’t enough for you then I have great news. My Dad Wrote a Porno has spawned a book, merchandise, and tours. Plus their social media accounts on Twitter and Instagram offer a wealth of extra stuff, from fan art to discussions of theories, to music and trailers.
The world of Belinda Blinked and My Dad Wrote a Porno doesn’t end when the headphones come off.
I’ve never met
anybody with something bad to say about it- and it’s a real community
That’s right- every person I know who’s listened to it loves it. Sure, there’s maybe some people who found it didn’t suit them, but on the whole the entertaining and sometimes baffling podcast is a real crowd-pleaser (as long as that crowd doesn’t include your grandparents, of course). The other great thing about it is that it’s a great community to be involved in. While everybody has favourite characters or plots (term used loosely), it’s the sort of fun thing that really doesn’t spawn much in the way of fandom drama, and the community very much thrives on the creative people in attracts. Who doesn't love that?
So if all- or even any- of that sounds fun to you, why not check out My Dad Wrote a Porno? Go on, you know you want to.
